'Knock 'Em Out' - Bailey

Evaluation - Question 1

To add a real comical element and to make our video stand out, we decided to end it with the female protagonist chasing the male with a shoe. We edited in an old movie style effect (spehia with vertical scratches and dots). The 'We 'no speak Americano' music video also shows the convetional chasing of another character portrayed in old comedies. We thought this was effective in our video.

Evaluation - Question 2
I attempted for my ancillary task to also portray the artist’s image and personality, as it was a very prominent aspect of the actual music video. The artist appears on the front cover of the album, to be giving a rude gesture to the viewer, however to add a girly and cheeky element to it, I covered the hand gesture with a red lipstick kiss on Picassa (an editing software). This allowed parallels between the music video and the ancillary task adding fluidity and consistency in my coursework as a whole. I thought that the music video and the album cover worked well together, it was a believable combination. I did think its was risky to use a rude gesture on my album cover but I thought it was worth it because the artist that my group and I had portrayed on our blogs, who was an independent, rebellious, slightly feminist young woman, who has a cheeky side, and a good sense of humour was presented well on the cover. I believe that all these characteristics were portrayed in both the video and album cover. I didn’t want the album cover to look too girly so a tried to use soft colours then that the bold red lipstick mark, which I think signified a strong personality in a minimalistic way. The album advert featured the album cover so that was immediately linked. I added a magazine quote saying ‘Hilarious feel good tracks’ to add to the authenticity of an album advert and also put a bold statement about the release of the album. The album cover acted as a background for the advertisement which I thought was good rather than using another picture of the artist. I feel that all three coursework tasked linked and worked together well, showing consistency in my research and planning.

Audience Feedback - Media Showcase
We had a media showcase where the rest of our school were able to have a viewing of our finished music videos, we tried to get as much audience feedback as possible by giving the audience response sheets to fill out, and set up response booths so after the showcase was over they could give us some verbal feedback that we could film on our flip cameras
Here are some quotes from the response sheet about our music video:
"old man walking <3"
"up beat, got me groovin' in me seat"
"good use of editing for fast pace lyrics"
"the camera angles - Clever!"
"worked well!"
"diverse and kept my attention"
"Interesting use of location"
"the use of props fitted the lyrics"
"camera angles fitted the comedy aspect"

Jessie J 'Price Tag'
This is such a good video! I love the beginning scene when she walks around the huge teddy bear and transitions from a young girl to her adult self. Just thought i'd share that.

Types of CD Packaging
A jewel CD case is the original compact disc case that has been used since the compact disc was first released in 1982. It is a three-piece plastic case, measuring 142 mm × 125 mm × 10 mm (5.59 in x 4.92 in x 0.39 in), a volume of 177.5 cm³, which usually contains a compact disc along with the liner notes and a back card.
(Wikipedia)
This is an example:
Digipaks typically consist of a gatefold (book-style) paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD attached to the inside. Since Digipaks were among the first alternatives to jewel cases to be used by major record companies, and because there is no other common name for Digipak-style packaging made by other companies, the term digipak or Digi-Pak is often used generically, even when the media holder is a hub or "Soft Spot" rather than a full plastic tray.

Videos that have inspired our edititng
We were trying to find ways to enhance the strong beat of the song through our music video. We took element from this video such as the jumpy and quick repetition of small movements. We used this techinique in the beggining of our video with the footsteps and also to fix an error we had made in filming. We did a point of view shot when the male blows glitter to the camera and the reaction shot of the girl receiving the glitter in her face, however the angle in which she recieved the glitter was different to the angle in which the male blew it. so we had to make a few adjustments using the technique. This technique came in handy and looked better than our intial edit.
When we went on our Richmix trip in November Peter Fraser used this video as an example of how the objectification of women have changed over the years. We used this element in a funny way to outline the message of our song which has a pro - women attitude.

Album cover analysis
I have chosen two album covers to analyse to help me with my own album cover project. This exercise has given me alternative ideas to my original one.

Album cover
I have aleady changed my mind about my Digipak cover. I spotted a old cream beetle car around where I live. I really want to ask the owner if I can use it for my Media project. I'm not sure how i'm going to go about asking a stranger if I can use their car but I am definately going to try! I don't intend to drive it, I just want a shot of the artist appearing to search for something in the back of the car so you can just see her legs wearing a pair of nice heels. I aslo want to have a feminine handbag on the hood of the car in the shot from the front of the car. I want the image to be colourful but I may make it grainy to suit the style of the car.

Laat minute ideas for shots
We were trying to find ways to do a shot where the protagonist walks over the camera. This AS music video gave us an idea of how we could do this.
Who ever is filming will lie on the ground across the path that the protagonist is walking. The camera will be facing the protagonist so it looks like a low angle shot. As they approach the camera the shot will look lower and lower until they step over and the camera will follow the step over, until there is an upside down shot of them walking away from the camera.

Update

Our coursework filming has gone extremely well so far! We have used all kinds of shots and styles ( my favorite being the point of view shots). We managed to get the owner of a pub 'The Kings Head' to allow us to film in there. We were worried that the lighting may be too dark but everything went well and we managed to get some really good shots ( whilst drinking apple juice from a pint glass).
Our last place to film is at the Playing fields in Enfield .. Hopefully that goes well also!

Narrative work (exam)
I have decided to use the narrative from my AS media coursework in my exam. I believe the narrative has more substance and I would be able to analyse it more because of the thought that went behind it.
We created the introduction to a thriller film and called it 'Delirium'. The plot was based around a young girl who's bestfriend had been murdered and she was the only one that realised who it could have killed her. Her Ex boyfriend. She then seeks revenge and goes out to kill him.
We decided to introduce the film with the ending so the story could be unfolded during the film. We started it at the point of 'Disequilibrium' a term that Todorov suggested as mid point in a film where the initial 'Equilibrium' is distrupted by an intervention from some other force. We thought this would make the content of the film more interesting as it would go back in time and show the journey of the characters 1 year before this stage.
We also used a voice over of a news report about two teenage deaths and the possibility of them being connected. This would make the readers interested as at this point the main protagonist is walking to a house disorientated and drunk, still mourning over the loss of her best friend and turning to drug and alcohol as a coping mechanism. She then gets into what would appear to be her home. We tried to make it obvious that there were possibly people (family) at home, so we directed our actor look up the stairs to appear as if she was trying to see if someone was in. She has a moment of realisation ( this is when she realises that her ex - boyfriend murdered her best friend) and then take a knife from the kitchen draw and walks out of the house ( leaving the front door open to show she has lost all sense of saftey or awareness) and walks out in the dark. this leaves a sort of cliff hanger for the audience to want more.
