After much discussion and debate, we have finally decided to have one artist and discard of the group 'The Coralliens'. We thought it would look better visually if there was one artist and her outfit changed rather than the whole person changing. Luckily our decision to change it to a soloist does not affect the storyboard at all.
All the girls in our group are interested in being the artist so we are going to try and get some audience feedback by filming us all lip syncing individually, showing each clip to our media class and getting them to vote on the most suitable artist ... this will be very funny and helpful.

Our media lesson last week was about the conventions of a music video.
The most significant thing I learnt was the fact that we should make use of the tempo (pace) of our track.
Our song is quite fast and has a very prominent beat so our editing must match!
I am currently trying this out with a song called 'Reckoner' by Radiohead the song has a beat sequence with symbols, I edited footage that I filmed on the weekend to go with this song.

Above is our first attempt at lip syncing. Danielle and I plucked up the courage to finally practice!
I have edited it so that you can see clips of both of us and put it in time of the track rather than using the sound from our Mac. It took a while to get the clips in time with the music but I thought I did it justice.

Intertextuality is the theory that all media texts are interrelated, and can only be defined by their relations with others, it is the shaping of texts' meanings by using other texts. Here are a few examples.
Madonna's - 'What it feels like for a girl' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYwgG2oyUbA
The track contains a spoken introduction by actress Charlotte Gainsbourg taken from the 1993 film version of the Ian McEwan novel, The Cement Garden.

Our group were trying to figure out the identity of our band ' The Coralliens'. Our video features us individually rather than together performing as a group. Uncertain about our decision to be viewed individually through out the majority of the video, we looked at other girl bands.
Girls Aloud are filmed together throughout the video, this conforms to the expectations of a girl band. We decided not to fall into a typical girl band image and add a bit of flare by representing different personalities by filming us individually for most of the video.
'The Spice Girls' maintained this idea of very different characters within a band, though we are not intending to define our personalities as much.

We wanted to add a comical, silent scene to end our video, with the four female actors chasing the male actor down a path with all their different props e.g a bunch of flowers or a high heel. We thought it would be interesting to edit this end clip to have a sepia, 'old movie' effect.

I feel like I have become attached to Lily Allen as an artist through researching her life and career, I was heart broken to hear the sad news that she had miscarriage. I copy and pasted an article from http://www.guardian.co.uk/ about her unfortunate loss.

I have decided to conduct a questionnaire about the expectations and preferences of a music video. I will give the questionnaire to teenagers between ages 12 - 19 as that is our target audience and I want quite specific information.
Below are the questions:
1. Name two things you would generally expect to see in a 'Pop' music video.
2. What artist do you think is a true representative of generic pop music?
3. Do you feel it is important for the artist to feature in his/her video?
4. On a scale of 1- 10 how important is the inclusion of attractive actors?
5. Do you prefer a video to be:
1. Abstract with little links to the song/lyrics
2. Direct with clear links to the song/lyrics
3. It's not important
6. On a scale of 1- 10 how important is editing and visual effects in a music video?
7. Do you feel that the music video should represent the artist's style and personality?
8. Looking now at Lily Allen in specific, name three elements you would expect to see in one of her music videos ?
9. Name your favourite Lily Allen music video.
10. What about it did you enjoy?
I tried to obtain qualitative data by asking open ended questions such as number (7), which requires the respondent to elaborate on their opinion. I have only put a few open ended questions as I do not want my respondent to loose interest in the questionnaire. The questionnaire also includes questions that would provide quantitative data such as number (5) which provides the respondent with 3 answer options that they have to chose from. Working at Indiefields (a market research company) where my job description was to carry out questionnaires over the phone, made me realise that questionnaires are not so easy to conduct. They must engage the respondent so that they do not lose interest and drop out of the questionnaire or HANG UP ON YOU! Giving them more multiple choice questions to prompt the accurate answer provides quantitative data but it is easier to obtain, where as qualitative data needs a very willing participant. I have asked questions that can provide me with both types of data.

Our group have now established a band name 'The Coralliens', we formed the name by thinking of a colour that best suited us as a band, we chose Coral as it is quite feminine and classy. We then translated the word coral to french which came to be a catchy and edgy band name.
Cher's Xfactor performance inspired me to find the reasons for Shakespeare's sister's band name and thought it was quite intriguing.
'Shakespeare's sister' was a two membered pop - glam band formed in 1988 by Siobhan Fahey, the second memeber was Marcella Detroit (who later left in 1993).
This is the song Cher performed and is one of their best songs - 'Stay'Their band name was based on a fictional character invented by the English author Virginia Woolf, "Judith". Judith was a fictional sister of Shakespeare in the feminist essay called "A Room Of One's Own." In the 1980s the punk band the Smiths (Siobhan Fahey's favorite band) wrote a song titled "Shakespeare's Sister", which is where Siobhan took it from.

I have made a short power point document about Lily Allen. I thought I needed to include some information about our artist because some of the elements of her back ground and life style are represented through our music video. For example her London based background is going to be shown through the mise- en - scene in our video.

All four of the girls in my group are going to feature in the video and will each represent one point of view. Through out the video there is a reccuring image of us walking down a path lipsincing, but we wanted to edit it so as the song plays, the person and their outfit changes in quick shots to the beat of the song. We have been trying to find a good example of this kind of editing and the latest Tia Maria Advert has a similar effect to what we want in our video.

This is Rihanna's latest video to 'Only Girl', it was directed by Anthony Mandler a top commercial and music video director who has worked with her in previuos videos such as 'Russian Roulette' and 'Unfaithful'.
I'm hoping we can take some elements of this video and apply them to ours.

Michael Jackson - Thriller was the first narrative music video that was extended to a short film. The video was adapted many times with the longest length of around 14 minutes. Micheal Jackson's many talents were shown through this video and it was voted the most influential pop music video of all time. It was proved to have a profound effect on pop culture.
The video was choreographed by Michael Peters and Michael Jackson.

The term 'Pop Music' originated from an abbreviation of the word 'popular'. Pop music is generally marketable and memorable and is known for its ability to attract listeners because of its versitility, derived from a plethora of years of musical influences. This genre has evolved and has branched out into many sub-genres, that still have some conventions of generic pop music but have also adopted other musical styles or genres to create a new, contemporary sound.

Illustration - A straight forward performance or simple narrative video or a mixture, to illustrate the meanings of the lyrics and visualise the music in a straight forward way.
Example:
Amplification - The use of narrative or performance music videos in a less straight forward way in atempt to amplify creative interpretation, unusual and surrealist approaches. These still have a direct link to the song or lyrics.
Example: Biffy Clyro - 'God and Satan'
Disjuncture - This type of music video presents an abstract approach to the music or lyrics, providing viewers with visuals that are not obvious or directly linked to the music, lyrics, song title or artist.
Example: Bomb the Bass - 'Black River'
This video was directed by Corin Hardy who spoke at a music video convention that I was fortunate enough to attend. He has made a variety of music videos for a range of artists. I was really impressed by this video in particular because of the way in which he described the filming.
He used his friend, a car, a cheap mask and filmed in the woods. With these limited resources he was able to create an interesting and slightly strange video that I enjoyed watching. Here is a link one of his profiles -

This music video has a strong narrative. The settings and storyline directly reflect the lyrics to the song e.g In the scene at the beginning the lyrics say "life behind bars in the 21st century ain't nothing nice" and it shows the artist in a prison having a fight with another inmate. These are conventions of an 'illustration' music video as it directly links to the lyrics and meaning of the song.

Mood Board
I have created a mood board that represents the conventions of british pop music. The bright colours accentuate the girly aspect of pop music. We also intend for our music video to be cheeky and brassy, I used a leopard print pattern and an image of a fashionable girl in attempt to create this characteristic.I also thought our genre of music suits a 'girls' night out' theme so I added pictures of colourful cocktails and a nightclub/ bar scene. I incorporated a british flag to highlight the fact that british pop music embraces the culture; I intetionally used a flag that was slightly faded in colour to highlight the fact that some british pop artists have a non conformists, rebelious attitude such as Lily Allen who is a potential artist for the song for our music video.

There are a variety sub-genres within pop music such as 'Indie pop' and 'Pop rock' so we have deceided to outline characteristics for our specific type of pop music.
We want our music video to be:
- Fun
- Light hearted
- Cheeky
- Girly
- Colourful
Songs that was considered for our video: Lenka - 'The Show'
Good Points: The song is very girly and could we thought we could ask a friend who is a ballerina to feature in it.
Bad Point: The song has a slow pace and can get a boring.
Katy Perry - 'Peacock'
Good Points: The song is by the famous artist Katy Perry but does not have a video which is an advantage because our video will not be compared to an original music video.
Bad Points: We wanted to use 'british pop music' to emphasise on a certain type of pop music.
